A private university's editorial style guide for internal and external communications

August 2012

From the day I arrived at Saint Leo University in 2005, I championed the need for an editorial style guide to support our brand and to reign in the inconsistent use of university nomenclature. A few years later, I led the production process.

First, we gathered input from leadership and the departments and people who had a stake in what would be included. The group included a cross-section of employees from Marketing & Enrollment, Student Services, University Ministry, Athletics, and, of course, the English Department.

The result was a relatively concise, easy-to-use manual based on the Associate Press Style Book. We made exceptions to AP Style where it made sense to honor the university's history and to reinforce its values-based culture.

In addition to providing print and PDF copies to faculty and staff, University Communications held several face-to-face (in person and virtual) educational sessions for the internal community to review the the guidelines, their significance, and to answer questions and offer support.

Below is a copy of the 2012 update to Saint Leo University's editorial style guide, sans covers. For those wondering: A separate graphic standards guide was also developed.
