A profile of naturalist and author of the acclaimed memoir Ecology of a Cracker Childhood Janisse Ray.
I interviewed Ray during her 4-day visit to Saint Leo University in 2012. Ray was invited to the university because her work as a writer and environmentalist reflected the university's core values of responsible stewardship, excellence, respect, and personal development.
The story was published in the Spring 2012 issue of the university's Spirit Magazine.
Excerpt
Speaking to a class of English composition students at University Campus in February, visiting Woodrow Wilson Fellow, author, and naturalist Janisse Ray encouraged students to take stock of the world they will be entering— a world in which they will face great competition for jobs, the burden of student loans, the toxification of the environment, and climate change. “It’s a crazy time to be entering society,” she said, but she has hope. She was able, after all, to find her place and her calling in spite of bewildering circumstances.
